Poker Tournaments

Poker tournaments come in many variations, from the games being played such as Texas Hold’em, Omaha or Seven Card Stud; from structured fixed limit to unstructured no limit betting, and a variety of different entries such as buy-ins, re-buys or freerolls. Prizes can vary from smaller sums for the daily online poker tournaments to the big prizes of the annual grand world tournaments such as World Series of Poker tournament.

Poker tournaments are extremely exciting and provide the opportunity for one winner, there is no possibility of a draw or re-match due to bad weather. There is only one possible outcome and that is of one single winner, the person that finishes with all the chips at the end of the tournament. For the players of the big world tournaments there is the kudos that goes with winning that all important bracelet and of course not forgetting the thousands of dollars in prize money usually generated by sponsorship for the large poker tournaments.

Entry to the major tournaments is usually achieved by playing at satellite poker tournaments, buying-in or by invitation and most of the top online poker sites offer regular tournaments that will give the opportunity to gain entry to some of the larger prestigious poker tournaments. To play in a fixed buy-in tournament, a poker player will pay the fee to enter the tournament and be given chips that have no actual value to play with, there may also be the opportunity to re-buy or buy-back later in the poker tournament if the players chip stack gets low. Poker is played until each table is eliminated from play in multi-table poker tournaments reducing the players down until there is only one table left. The final prize fund is usually divided by order of elimination, the last player standing with chips is the winner and earns the majority of the prize fund, and the rest of the prize money is divided between the players depending on their finishing position on the final table.
